Khutba on Safe Haven (27th April 2012)

Allah says in His Noble Quran, the translation of which is, “Do they not see that We have established a safe haven while people all round them are violently dispossessed?"

This ayat is addressed to the Quraysh and the haraman aminan to which it refers is Makka, a city that Allah has always protected, given that it is home to His House. Those who made it their home and undertook to preserve and maintain it and took on the responsibility of looking after those who came to visit it and honour it, they were kept safe and protected from the upheaval that surrounded them, while those who lived outside were at constant risk of being killed or enslaved. This is perfectly exemplified by the story of the elephant and what happened to the forces of Abraha when they came to destroy the haram. Allah says,

the translation of which is, “Do you not see what your Lord did with the Companions of the Elephant? Did He not bring all their schemes to nothing, unleashing upon them flock after flock of birds, bombarding them with stones of hard-baked clay, making them like stripped wheat-stalks eaten bare?"

And by the conquest of Mecca by the Messenger of Allah when he promised safety to anybody who stayed in the haram. But it is also clear that this aya refers to Islam, the deen of Allah. In every aspect of life and in every zone of human activity, it is the only safe haven, the only thing that protects the human being and inures him against the calamaties of the world. For make no mistake, man when left to his own devices, brings down ruin and calamity on his head. That is the account of history for any who care to read it. That is the warning that Allah gives us throughout the Quran when He tells us,

the translation of which is, “Say: ‘Travel about the earth and see the final fate of those before.” What is the lesson we learn? That whenever mankind stepped outside the bounds of the deen and forgot his Lord, whenever he thought he had all the answers and could run his own affairs without divine guidance, he sowed the seeds of his own destruction and downfall. Allah says in surat al-Ankabut,

the translation of which is, “We seized each one of them for their wrong actions. Against some We sent a sudden squall of stones; some of them were seized by the Great Blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned. Allah did not wrong them; rather they wronged themselves."  Without Islam, man inevitably flounders, lurching from crisis to crisis, until one of these fates befalls him – they drown in a sea of debt, or they are swallowed up by the problems of their lives, or the world collapses around them and on top of them.

For make no mistake, the modern world is in crisis whichever aspect you look to – financial, physical, spiritual or psychological. And there is no escape whichever way they turn except in Islam. Allah says,

the translation of which is, “There is no refuge from Allah except in Him.” There is no escape from Him except in His deen. And as He says,

the translation of which is, “The only deen with Allah is Islam” It is the one and only safe haven for mankind, for it is the life for which mankind was designed. It is His fitra. Allah says,

the translation of which is, "So set your face firmly towards the Deen, as a pure natural believer, Allah’s natural pattern on which He made mankind. There is no changing Allah’s creation." Man cannot change who he is. He has been designed perfectly to live a life, and that life is the life of the deen, within its bounds and parameters, as best exemplified by the Messenger of Allah and his Companions. And like any tool designed for a particular purpose, when it is used for something else, it gradually spoils and gets ruined, and spoils what it comes into contact with. Allah says,

The translation of which is, “Corruption has appeared in both land and sea because of what people’s own hands have brought about” This world has been brought to its knees by the actions of mankind, and the only way for any of its inhabitants to find safety and security, succour and solace, is to enter into the haram of Islam. There they will find the solutions to the problems of this world, and salvation from the terrors of the Next. As Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib advices in his diwan,

“Board the ship of the sunna and you will be safe."

As I mentioned earlier, man has lost his way in every aspect of his life and every aspect of his being. He is losing his mind, losing his health, losing his wealth, losing his freedom, losing his friends and family and losing all sense of hope. Indeed, it would be more correct to say ‘lost’ instead of ‘losing’, for many have nothing left and go through life in automatic pilot, searching for some meaning to their existence, some positive, but finding none. There is no solution to be found anywhere except in Islam.

This world is a psychological mess. Mental illness has never been so prolific, nor has depravity been so rife. People are mixed up/confused and in turmoil. Suicide rates are at an all time high, especially in the most developed of countries. They don’t know their place in the world nor their role in the general scheme of things. They feel powerless and disenfranchised, and yet they are told they are empowered. They feel empty and yet they are told they have access to everything. For many, peace and satisfaction is an impossibility, and so they turn to the one solace they know – the bottle and drugs. For in their drunken drugged state, they are able to forget the mess that it is their lives. In reality, the answer, as with everything lies with Islam. Man can only be in his psychological safe haven when he remembers who he is and who his Lord is. Allah says,

the translation of which is, “It is only with the remembrance of Allah that hearts are made tranquil.” And that peace can also be found in His worship, for the Prophet used to tell Bilal to bring rest to the Muslims by giving his call to the prayer. When man returns to Allah, and puts the sunna of the Messenger into action, he feels valued and fulfilled because his life has purpose and he is acting in accordance with that purpose. He is doing what he is meant to do and what he needs to do to get through the trials of the dunya.

This world is in total economic meltdown. The vast majority live their lives in debt from the moment they are born, working themselves to the bone, often two or three jobs at a time, simply to meet their obligations and get enough to put food in their mouths and a roof over their heads. But despite their best efforts, their debts grow and their overheads increase. They can never do enough to escape the cycle. They are slaves in every sense of the word, forced to live a life they do not want to live to support an existence they are neither happy nor content with. And there are considered the lucky ones, not being blown to pieces by the weapons whose production is necessary to keep this financial hegemony in place, nor starving to death as a result of droughts created by overfarming of lands to pay back debts no living person took out. And after all of that, they are still being tricked, for the money they take has no value of its own. In one night, it can all be rendered worthless by some decision taken elsewhere, as happened in Zimbabwe and Argentina when rich people were turned into paupers overnight, and what might have bought a car one day could not even buy a loaf of bread the next.

The solution, of course, lies with Islam, and with the reimplementation of the vast area of the deen that relates to financial matters, the muamalat. Ad-deen muamala. The restoration of gold and silver puts real wealth back into the hands of the people, the re-establishment of the free market gives people the venue to work for themselves and earn their own living, and the return of zakat and the awqaf purifies the wealth of the rich and ensures the poor have sufficiency. Money, the lifeblood of a community ceases to be locked away in the vaults of the rich and instead flows through all levels of society, restoring it to life and giving people back their sense of worth.

The truth is that Islam is the safe haven for people in every respect. And keeping within its bounds ensures success and salvation. It is the protection for the world and its ecology, it is the secret to military success, it is the defence against the epidemics of aids and obesity, it is the key to preventing the breakdown of family and community, and it is the only means of finding success in the Next.

If we hold firm to it, and keep the company of those who spend their lives and their wealth to see it implemented in its fullness and glory, then we will be protected from the calamities and crises that beset all of those around us and violently uproot them from their lives. We will be safely on board the ship of the sunna, while those around us flounder and drown. That is Islam, that is the deen of Allah. And that is what we have and are charged with restoring. So thank Allah and never seek calling to it. We thank Allah for placing us within the ranks of the Muslims and giving us safe haven. And we ask Him to continue to keep us in safety and give us the strength and the himma to establish the deen in its fullness and glory and restore what has been lost.
